Rolling back a failed upgrade can be tough, especially if your system has already gone through big changes…

Unlike all previous upgrades, this one failed after the first reboot. I heard a bunch of disk noise, and then got the "something went wrong. See a system administrator" screen. The /etc/release now says Fedora 40, but the kernel is still 39. This happens on all old releases, except I can boot a rescue kernel. I have no clue as to what to do now. Is it even possible to roll back at this point? If not, how do I make progress?
