Nice work getting that old Toshiba to multiboot four distros—impressive!

Good call avoiding the GRUB overwrite; that can definitely mess with multi-boot setups. Having Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, and KDE all working smoothly on Mint 22.1 is pretty sweet.

As long as everything’s running fine and you’re careful with updates, you should be good. Just keep backups, just in case something breaks down the line.

I found the KDE Plasma desktop environment in the Mint Software Manager and installed it from there. During the install, it tried to rewrite GRUB, but I declined since I didn’t want to risk breaking access to my other partitions.

The install completed successfully, and everything still seems to work fine. I can still access all the desktop environments I’ve installed on my Mint partition. All I have to do is log out of one DE and log back in with another, and everything works as expected.

Right now, I’ve got Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, and KDE Plasma available at login on Mint 22.1. I might run into issues down the road with this setup, but so far, it’s running just fine.

Linux Mint doesn’t officially support KDE anymore, but yes, you can install KDE Plasma 6.2 or 6.3 manually. Just keep in mind that these versions aren’t in the Mint 22/Ubuntu 24.04 default repos yet, so you’d need to use third-party sources or wait for official support via KDE Neon or a stable PPA.

If you’re looking for the smoothest KDE experience, trying KDE Neon might be a better option.
