@Wlly,

I get your frustration, but this isn’t really a “Linux isn’t ready” issue. What you ran into is almost certainly a media player or desktop environment enforcing copy-protection flags on that specific CD. Some audio CDs include DRM metadata, and certain Linux applications choose to respect it by default, while Windows software often ignores it.

Linux itself isn’t locking your CD. It’s the application stack you happened to install. On many Linux distributions, switching to a different media player or ripping tool completely bypasses this behavior. Ironically, Linux is usually better at CD ripping once properly configured.

I recently did a fresh install of a Linux distribution (I won’t mention the name). I was listening to a music CD for a few minutes when, all of a sudden, a lock icon appeared on every track on the CD. After investigating, I discovered that the lock was intended to disable CD copying. What???

This would never happen on Windows. Mind you, Windows 11 is installed on one of my partitions, and it does a better job when it comes to copying CDs.

What I deduce from this experience is that listening to CDs on some Linux distributions is a no-no. Why would I promote Linux to a Windows user? It doesn’t make sense at all. Linux is not ready for prime time.

Please be explicit and tell us what the article got wrong in the form of constructive criticism. Your critique is vague and belittling. Maybe we, too, could learn from your highly esteemed experience?

Mr. Anderson, please enlighten us. What did the article get wrong so we don't go running the wrong way?

@John,

Thank you for pointing that out.

Although ClearOS is no longer actively developed after its last release in 2019, the team has provided the source code to the community, meaning it can still be used but without future updates or security patches.

ClearOS has been dead for years. I don't know why people keep including it in their lists. It's like writers just google linux servers and copy and paste whatever they see.
