That makes total sense – cost and freedom are reason enough! Going M$-free is a huge win, and I hear you on trying to get out of Google’s grip too. Have you found any solid alternatives yet, or are you still testing the waters?

No hidden gems — just cost and available apps. Once I switched to Linux, I went M$-free. Now I’m trying to disentangle myself from Google. :-)

Funny enough, I made the jump from M$ Office to LibreOffice for almost the same reason, having a full suite without paying extra is unbeatable. The database and extra tools alone made it worth sticking with.

What’s your favorite hidden gem in Star Office that keeps you coming back?

I switched from M$ Office to Star Office (the grandfather of LibreOffice) because it offered a database and two other modules for free. I have used it through all its iterations. LibreOffice is a complete Office suite while M$ Office was (and is) a partial one. At work, I used SQL Server and Informix. Never had any problems running queries from those apps in LibreOffice.
