Poll: Will You Upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 (Xerial Xerus) LTS?

Ubuntu Linux is the most popular and used Linux distribution out there and there is no doubt about that, according to Infographics released by Canonical.

They actually did this to celebrate the final, stable release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, which has been code named Xenial Xerus. Also to show the World how popular Ubuntu is among Linux users.

Many Ubuntu users may already have an idea of what to expect in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, but here are some of the changes and new features to expect which include among others the following:

Updated Packages

  1. Linux Kernel 4.4
  2. GNU toolchain: binutils to has been updated to the 2.26 release, glibc to the 2.23 release and GCC to a recent snapshot from the GCC 5 branch.
  3. Python 3.5
  4. VIM packages have also been built on python3
  5. lxd 2.0
  6. docker 1.10
  7. Juju 2.0
  8. PHP 7.0
  9. Golang 1.6

Google’s Go language also referred to as Golang toolchain has also been upgraded to 1.6 series. There are also changes and updates on Ubuntu Desktop and Server, you can read more from Xenial Xerus Release Notes.

With all these numerous improvements and new features on Ubuntu 16.04 (Xerial Xerus) Long Term Support release, users can expect critical security patches, select application updates and also regular stability fixes for the next five years.

Many users must be asking them selves whether to upgrade or not, with support for Ubuntu 15.04 set to end in July, 2016.

  1. Not upgrading unless I find a way to keep php to version 5. Upgrading php to 7.0 will mean that the projects I am working on will not work.

      I think you are wrong, upgrading to PHP 7 from PHP 5 means better performance and stability, rest of the application will work on PHP 7 too, give a try on your local and see, if it works do a upgrade..

  2. Ubuntu has had great success with their distro launches unlike Windows. I for one trust them with their product for quality and reasonable bug fix releases.

  3. Upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04 is a sure deal for me, especially with the problems i have faced in using Ubuntu 15.10. I would want to experience the new changes and features.
