I started TecMint on 15th August 2012 as a free Linux tutorial site. For 15+ years it was the best decision I ever made.
By 2022, that side project had grown into a site read by 5 million people every month, with a small team I trusted and readers in 180 countries. Advertisers got eyes on Linux sysadmins, readers got tutorials with no paywall, and I got to spend my days writing. For 15 years it worked, and that's the part I never saw coming.
Then AI search arrived. I watched the analytics every Monday morning in 2023, and every Monday the line went down. Over 2 years, monthly traffic dropped to 1 million. Hosting, the office, author fees, all of it still costs the same. So I had a choice.
I could have paywalled the site, like a lot of others did. I couldn't bring myself to. 16 years of free Linux content, and I wasn't going to be the guy who put a wall in front of it.
