The latest Firefox 17 release brings a number of new features, including a new social Facebook Messenger integration, improve display of location bar results, larger icons in the awesome bar and click to play warnings on out-dated Firefox plugins.
So, for only one social API introduced in this release i.e. Facebook, but Mozilla is also planning to add support for Twitter. For a complete list of features and changes refer to the official release notes.
The new Facebook API feature adds a ‘persistent’ notification tab at the right hand side of the toolbar in Firefox. Here you will get new notifications, messages alerts and as well as enabled Facebook chat sidebar on all tabs.
To turn on Facebook Messenger, you must have Firefox 17 installed on your system and then head over to http://facebook.com/about/messenger-for-firefox.
Installing Firefox 17 in Ubuntu 12.04/12.10, Xubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint 14/13
We use Firefox repository to install Firefox 17 under Ubuntu 12.10/12.04, Xubuntu 12.10, Linux Mint 14/13, open terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T from the Desktop and type the following commands.
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install firefox
Starting Firefox 17
Run the following command from the Desktop to start the Firefox 17.
$ sudo firefox

That’s it , you have successfully installed Firefox 17. For other distributions Firefox 17 can be available for download from their official Firefox website.
